Details: The anthropophagic manifest written by Oswaldo de Andrade served as the first step to a new movement among Neo-concrete artists, especially Helio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, and Lygia Pape. These three artists aimed to break Brazilian artistic production dependency on European modern and concrete art during the 60s, underlining a cultural shock characteristic of the process of colonization of the country. Helio Oiticica was the first one to use the term Tropicalia, which became an important cultural movement that encapsulated the forms of art explored in this collection. Everything was created under an experimental and daring atmosphere with a free approach inside a community, especially producing art under two decades of dictatorship, repression, and marginality. The use of geometry and color with a desire for them to free themselves from the surface (paper, canvas, wall) towards space and a perception that would occur not only with the passive eye, but with the whole body.  The Filmmakers Glauber Rocha and Neville d’Almeida, each of them in a different and complex way, explored the concepts of freedom, the need of the country to find its own individuality accepting the duality present in it and its impermanence, complementary to that of being in a community seeking for individuals who wanted to reject hypocrisy and accept that every man goes through an internal fight to accept its own contradictions.
